Octapod is the leading arts service organisation in Newcastle and the Lower Hunter working with community to build a thriving and inclusive creative sector that actively contributes to the cultural and economic growth of the region.
We use a community cultural development approach to support arts and cultural participation by people from diverse backgrounds. Our creative pathways model is responsive to local need and fosters community ownership and participation.
Since 2010 we have worked to support participation in the arts by artists with disability as creators, participants, audiences and leaders.
In 2017 we are working towards better engaging with Aboriginal and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, to support their participation in the arts.
Examples of our work includes:
- Auspicing the Cultural STOMP Festival in Newcastle
- Delivering digital storytelling projects with refugees in Newcastle
- Providing organisational mentoring to the Artist Run Initiative Newcastle (ARIN) (Visual Arts), Inside Out (Visual Arts, Maitland) and Write Up! (Writing, Newcastle)
- Smart Arts Community Consultation in Port Stephens
What people say about working with us:
“As an artist with a disability I appreciate Octapod’s commitment to inclusion. Working with Octapod on the Storm in 2015 gave an opportunity for me to practise my art, collaborate with fellow artists and bring our work to a broader community. The focus on inclusion meant that we were able to invite everyone to join us. It was wonderful to work with Octapod’s reflective, fun and committed staff to resolve any snags that arose during the process. It was a truly joyful collaboration.” Erika Gelzinnis, Creative Director, Open Cage Ensemble
