Addicted to Base

At Octapod, we just can’t get enough of being A Resource Base for Creative Projects. Members have access to meeting space and our collection of organisation-building resources. We will soon reopen the media space with video editing computers, for an exceptionally cheap members’ price. When free, office computers are also available to members and there is a scanner and pretty cheap photocopying.

Street Art Walking (SAW)

Street Art Walking began life as “walkARTbout”, part of the 2010 This is Not Art Festival. It was made up of a series of unique, creative and inspiring public art works that formed an art walk around Newcastle city and TINA venues, taking the public to exciting and unexplored areas of the city. Here is a photo of a work from that exhibition, the project called “Ears” that you have no doubt seen.

Octpod is delighted to see STREET ART WALKING (SAW) now operating as an independent project, managed by Simone Sheridan, who conceived the original project. Its current venture is a partnership with Newcastle City Council’s Pride of Place Program called the Theatre Lane Project, in which artists are called on to design posters recalling the days of the “silent pictures, vaudeville and early legitimate theatre” when the old Victoria Theatre had its heyday. See http://streetartwalking.wordpress.com/theatre-lane-project/ for more information.
Summit Else

Another fledgling project we watched fly the nest this year is Sound Summit, as you may be aware. Once part of TINA Festival, it struck out alone this year with all our love and support.

Artistic Ability

A further workshop will be held in the Art Counts series of workshops for people with disability. The workshops are run by Disability Hunter Network and supported by Octapod. Organisers say “thanks to the generosity of Sally Bourke, the Newcastle Community Arts Centre and Eckersley’s Art and Craft Newcastle we are going to be holding a further painting/drawing (participants will be able to choose which medium they focus on) workshop on…”

– Friday 21st October 2011 9.30-12.30

The workshops are held at the Black Box Theatre at the Community Arts Centre. See http://culturehunter.org/whatson/extra-art-counts-workshop-added-artists-disability for more details.

Chair of the Octapod nominated for Regional Community Service Award

The Octapod is pleased to announce that our committed chair of the board Allison Hammett has been nominated as one of the three finalists in the NSW & ACT Regional Community Service Awards 2011.

The Awards Program is presented by PRIME7 and the Commonwealth Bank and recognises groups, business, individuals and communities who play a vital role in enhancing the social, environmental and economic prosperity of rural NSW and the ACT.

As a finalist in the Regional Service Award Category, Allison was chosen from over 300 nominations received.  The Octapod is one of the only arts and cultural organisations to be associated with this award, a fantastic achievement which has highlighted Alison’s commitment to providing the Octapod with professional support. This support has assisted the organisation in building capacity and skills for its members and staff.

The Octapod would like to congratulate Allison on this wonderful achievement which has created an opportunity for the organisation to recognise and value all the great skills that our staff, volunteers, Board and members have.

Well done Allison!!
