Portrait Painters Hunter is a sub group of Society of Artists Newcastle who meet every Monday morning at the Society’s rooms in Lambton Park.
There is at present about 25 people who meet to hone their drawing and painting skills at representing the face. Live models , usually family, friends and professionals, sit for a 3 hour painting session and on alternate Monday’s, the artists pose for 15 minutes each, drawing to get a likeness in a short period. This all add up to a fun social gathering.
All mediums are used and there is some experimental work, but most are very experienced with their choices of artistic style and materials.
A very successful exhibition of work is held every year in March/April to coincide with the Archibald Portrait Prize with several artists having entries in both exhibitions. Images shown are a selection from the 2013 self portrait exhibition.
Group participants come all walks of life, some professional, some teachers and talented amateurs and hale from the Hunter – Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and Cessnock areas and new members are welcome.
Commissions are also taken by very experienced artists.
