PODspace: Call for exhibition artists

The PODspace program for 2014 is shaping up to be pretty diverse. Now operating in a pop up exhibition format with an associated series of workshops, Octapod is calling for artists to get involved with an exhibition to be held at the iconic Nobby’s Lighthouse site in July.

The guest curators for this exhibition are Nicole Chaffey and Alison Smith. The theme for the exhibition is along the lines of Transit Town, focusing on Newcastle’s role as a port, a stopping off point for both travellers and students, and perhaps referencing the rail corridor project, and the city’s shipping and transport histories.

We are now accepting Expressions of Interest from artists who would like to get involved with this opportunity to exhibit in a group exhibition. All mediums are welcome, including both 2D and 3D work. Works must be ready to hang. Please note that we cannot pin into the walls.

HOW TO APPLY:
If you are interested in submitting work for this exhibition, please send an email to podspace@octapod.org with the following:

1. Artist statement – tell us why you would like to be involved with this exhibition including how your work responds to the theme of Transit Town.

2. Artist bio – a short description of your art practice.

3. Three hi-res photos of your work. Please ensure that you name each photo including: Your name, title, medium, year created, and who we should credit for the photo. For example, “John Doe, Newcastle Port Life, photograph, 2013. Photo: Jane Smith.”

4. Tell us whether you would be interested in giving an Artist Talk at the exhibition opening.

Your Expression of Interest can be in written, audio or video format. Please note that the following limits apply:
– Written format (50 words max each for your artist bio and artist statement)
– Audio format (3 minutes)
– Video format (3 minutes)

WHEN IS THE EXHIBITION?
Two consecutive Sundays in July. Dates to be confirmed.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
We are aiming to involve six artists, who would then share the exhibition costs – venue hire, invitation, newspaper ad, small materials fee.

We estimate that it would cost $300. So each of the six artists might pay ca $83. Actual costs will be finalised once the number of artists is confirmed.

DOES OCTAPOD TAKE A COMMISSION?
Yes, our standard commission is 20% of art sales.

DO I HAVE TO SIT THE EXHIBITION?
Yes, artists are expected to help sit the exhibition, and will be rostered on over the exhibition period. Being present at your exhibition is a great way to promote your work to new audiences.

WHAT AUDIENCE NUMBERS CAN WE EXPECT?
Thousands over one weekend! In 2013 we held an exhibition at the Nobby’s Lighthouse (Station Master’s Cottage), and 4000 people visited the site over two weekends. This is not your typical ‘art’ crowd, but rather a diverse mix of Novocastrians. This exhibition is a great opportunity to get your work out to a broad audience.

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE HAPPENING ALONGSIDE THE EXHIBITION?
Octapod will present a workshop called ‘Curation and Installation: Behind the Scenes’.

The workshop will be presented in two parts:
Part One (1 hour): Learn about the basic principles of exhibition curation and installation. Nicole Chaffey and Alison Smith (guest curators) will then share their experience of curating the Transit Town exhibition.

Part Two (3 hours): Workshop participants will get the chance to help install the exhibition.

This workshop is suitable for practicing artists as well as general members of the public with an interest in the arts.

Bookings for this workshop will open soon. $35 Octapod members/$45 non-members.

It is hoped that one or two artists will give a short Artist Talk at the exhibition opening to give audiences an insight into their creative practice.
