Welcome to our June 2013 newsletter featuring the latest from Octapod and arts and culture in the Hunter.
PODspace at the Lighthouse
Following on from the success of INSERT, PODspace Gallery will be curating a two-week exhibition at Nobby’s Lighthouse; weekends 6-7 and 13-14 July. The exhibition will showcase local artists responding to and from Newcastle’s most prominent landmark as well as celebrating Newcastle and its rich arts community. PODspace Gallery will also be holding art-making workshops on site. MORE
Hunter Artsworker Database Call Out
Octapod is calling for artists from all mediums with experience working in disability or mental health contexts to register with the Hunter Artsworker Database. This resource is designed to promote the work that artists do to potential employers and/or creative collaborators.
The database will be housed on the Octapod website and will list artists according to arts practice and their experience working with people with disability and/or people with mental illness. Artists interested in registering are invited to download an application form and return to firstname.lastname@example.org by midday Thursday, 11 July 2013. Registration is free.
The Creative Access Network and Hunter Artsworker Database are initiatives of Octapod supported by The City of Newcastle. MORE
WATTS on WATT – City Evolutions Launches Tonight
Join in the free event to turn on the lights of City Evolutions and celebrate the history and everything that is great about Watt Street and Newcastle today. Watt Street will be open for pedestrians only as the bars, restaurants, galleries, theatres and venues open their doors onto the street with live music, great food, markets, street performances and more. PODspace Gallery – Call for New Curators
PODspace Gallery is currently looking for new volunteer curators to join the team. If you are an arts student, past or present, or have a strong desire to work in and amongst a gallery setting, then PODspace is a great place to start learning the ropes.
While PODspace Gallery is currently operating outside a traditional gallery space, experimenting with pop-up style exhibitions the gallery looks to move back to a regular exhibition space in 2014.

Travelling Film Festival Comes to Town
The Travelling Film Festival (TFF) is bringing a premium slice of Sydney Film Festival (SFF) to screen at Newcastle Tower Cinemas 21-23 June. Seven of the nine feature films are fresh from SFF including opening night feature Michael Winterbottom’s titillating tragedy ‘The Look of Love’. MORE
Morrow Park Fundraiser Gig
A special Morrow Park fundraiser will be held at the Lass O’Gowrie 13 July. Featuring one night only reunion performances by Mojo Juju & the Snake Oil Merchants and The Hauntingly Beautiful Mousemoon. Come along and support the artists and dig deep and give back to the creative community from the Morrow.
Newcastle Youth Orchestra
Two fantastic events by Newcastle Youth Orchestra are on this weekend, including:
Friday June 21 – The Orava Quartet
The superb ‘Orava Quartet’ are back in town and will be performing Haydn Opus 20 No.3, Jalbert Icefield Sonnets and Brahms Opus 51 No. 1 at 48 Watt St.
Saturday June 22 – From Russia With Love at Winter Heat and A Taste of Honeysuckle NYO presents ‘From Russia With Love’ in Harbour Square as part of Winterheat celebrations at Honeysuckle. In collaboration with local artists, fire installations and featuring local soprano, Eloise Rowland, this outdoor concert is sure to warm the hearts of many. MORE
Renew Newcastle’s Winter Wander
Join Renew Newcastle for Winter Wander, a free, guided walking tour of the newest activated spaces in Newcastle’s CBD, Thursday 4 July. You’ll discover handcrafted upcycled vintage industrial style furniture; a world-champion stone-carver’s studio and shop; dedicated shopfront for Newcastle’s Olive Tree Market; handcrafted slate homewares; a therapeutic, multi-sensory sculpture studio and the opening of a new exhibition of works by Kate Parker. 2013 Real Film Festival
The Real Film Festival (RFF) is back. An initiative of Screen Hunter Central Coast, the RFF is a holistic three day event created to foster and develop the art of storytelling real events through film.
As part of the festival a Short Film Competition is being held to provide incentive for filmmakers to tell their stories and showcase their talents. The competition comprises three categories including Primary School, High School and Open. Entries close 22 July. MORE
